8 track Tape Players

By Tony Lee

Go to any electronics store nowadays and check out all gadgets and toys that are available now: MP3, IPOD, Blue Tooth, Blue Ray, Hi-def, blue this, blue that. Yikes!

How can anyone keep up with all the new technologies that seem to overwhelm us day to day. Wouldn't it be nice to have a do all, play all audio device that would never be outdated?

That's what I thought, when I purchased my first 8 track Tape player. It was the 70's...warm California beaches, all my High School friends and endless sounds of the "Doobie brothers", "Earth Wind and Fire" and "Chicago" blasting off my Super High Tech good old 8 track tape player. It was a Panasonic portable that had a handle on the top that could change channels in an instant. Didn't have to worry about scratching my LPs, cause it was ALL on "Tape" and completely portable. Back in those days, the only other tapes were reel to reel and Cassette. It was just something about having a "new" invention in my hands and showing it off to all my buddies.

Alas, the short lived 8 track Player has come and gone. Reel to reel Tape players still live on, but usually as a "Vintage" novelty. The music Cassette has been replaced by the CD, or compact disc, which even now is being replaced by digital music files.

Looking back now when I was a kid, had I told my friends that my 8 track would someday be replaced by a device the size of my finger, they would have thought I was nuts!

I still listen to my favorites of the 70's. My 8 track is safely packed away in the closet and sometimes I'll pull it out just see if it still works and have a good laugh.

Now I just jump in my car, turn on my XM radio and let a Satellite orbiting the earth take me back to the 70's. What a great tech world we live in!
