A Visit to San Diego

By Tony Lee

San Diego, located in southern California, and just miles from the Mexican border, offers something for the whole family. You can enjoy the warm climate year round as the city is known for it being so "family friendly".

As an American city, it's Hispanic history never fades. "Old Town" San Diego is just one of my favorite places to enjoy when I visit the city. Located in the heart of San Diego, you can enjoy authentic Mexican food and music. But the fun in San Diego doesn't stop there.......

Sea World Adventure Park
San Diego is home to one of the most popular marine parks, Sea World. Sea World has marine exhibits, aquariums and rides like the Skyride and Skytower. You can enjoy great food and dining and souviniour shops. If you want to get the most out of the park, families can schedule "Behind-the-Scenes" Guided tours and animal interactions. The most exciting event is the Killer whale Shamu show, but be prepared to get wet if you fortunate enough to get a front row seat. It's a day you won't forget. Don't forget your camera!

Old Town San Diego
Enjoy the Mexican culture and history of "Spanish California" in Old Town. If you the love the sound of Mariachis, a cold Corona beer and fantastic Mexican food and fun, then Old Town is for you! Old Town also has a small Mexican shopping mall and is within easy walking distance of the Old Town.

225 years ago, Father Serra established the first mission where Old Town now sits. Rich in California history, Kit Carson helped to raise the first American flag in 1846. This is one place where you'll never get hungry, with 37 restaurants to serve you! I found the entertainment to be the best part of Old Town, with traditional Mexican dancers, galleries, mariachis, I guarantee you won't get bored! I recommend the Summer season as the nights are longer. You'll find yourself not wanting to leave!

Balboa Park
Adjacent to the The world-renowned San Diego Zoo is Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre city park that was built for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Expo. I took more photos here than I did anywhere else in San Diego. It's a photographers dream. Here you can witness California's Hispanic roots and experience breathtakingly ornate Spanish-style buildings. As Balboa Park is home to the zoo, it boasts 14 museums, a pipe organ pavilion, beautiful botanical gardens. One of many attractions you will absolutely love is the antique carousel and a miniature-scale train. If your in the San Diego area around Christmas, Balboa Park celebrates "Christmas on the Prado" that happens every first weekend of December.

The San Diego Zoo
This one tops them all. If you haven't fell in love with San Diego by now, you will by the end of the day! I've visited many Zoos, even in Europe, but the San Diego Zoo ranks numero uno on my list. With over 4,000 rare and exotic animal exhibits, rides and other attractions, you won't see the entire park in a day. This Zoo is huge, and I mean HUGE! The entire staff was very friendly and informative. If fact it's so large you may want to consider the bus tour. The sky ride was a blast, and, a great way to see just how large the Zoo really is.

GasLamp Quarter
For the Adults, GasLamp Quarter offers some great entertainment, especially at night. Described as Vibrant, eclectic, and endlessly entertaining, the Gaslamp Quarter takes up about 16 city blocks of the downtown San Diego area. You'll enjoy the many specialty shops and dozens of great restaurants and bars. The nightlife never stops as the shops stay open late, so you can enjoy shopping, drinking, and dining all at the same time. Gaslamp Quarter offers some great shopping as well, with many trendy fashion stores. If your a shop-aholic, you won't want to miss this area of San Diego!

With it's year round mild climate, San Diego is a great place to visit anytime of the year. It offers entertainment for both kids and adults, and with so much to do, you just might consider putting it on your vacation calendar, as many Californians already have!
