Buying a Bathroom Scale
By Tony Lee
There has been much progress over the years when it comes to the quality and accuracy of the common bathroom scale. There are many types and models of the device now on the market. In fact with all the technology involved in bathroom scales, you might feel like you’re at the local electronics store shopping for a big screen TV. Let's take a look at the two basic types of scales currently available on the market: Digital Scales A digital scale is the most accurate type of scale. It can be either battery or solar powered, but for most home use the battery operated scale is more practical. When you shop for a digital scale you should look for one with a large LCD display that lights up. I found this to be very useful when we replaced our scale recently. Our old scale had an LCD, but many times I found that using it in low light, such as the evening hours made it difficult to read. Another cool function we shopped for was a built in voice operated feature. This comes in very handy since you don't have to glance down at the LCD readout when you use it. If you have many family members that will be using the scale, consider purchasing a personalized scale. These types of scales offer settings and controls that you can program body composition information in such height, age and sex. If you really want to get fancy, you can shop for a digital scale with a bioelectrical impedance feature. This feature allows the scale to measure weight, body fat and body water percentage. The scale measures how quickly an electrical signal travels through your body. The more muscle tissue you have the faster the signal will travel. Since body fat contains hardly any water, and muscle tissue is made up of about 70% water, a comparison of the two is made and a measurement is given. Mechanical Scales Mechanical scales operate with springs and levers and although they are less costly, they are not as accurate. Although they can be cheaper, they lack valuable features that only digital scales have to offer. We may not like what message the bathroom scale delivers in terms of our weight, but at least there are many to choose from to give us the bad news!
