Buying Silver Jewelry and Tableware
By Tony Lee
Silver is a very popular precious metal when it comes to jewelry. Silver enhances a piece of jewelry just as gold does, but at a cheaper price. Silver is used in many jewelry applications such as rings, necklaces, body art, commemorative coins, equestrian, home decor, tea sets and many others. Silver also offers a great investment potential as it is classified as a high value metal. There are many trusted silver merchants that silver, but it's best to know what type of silver to buy before making your purchase. For starters, it would be best to buy from a brand name jewelry store for you first piece of silver jewelry. Many Mom and Pop stores also have silver jewelry available, but you should know your silver types before you buy from them. Sterling Silver Sterling Silver is usually graded as pure silver, but it is an alloy, meaning that is mixed with another metals. For example, many sterling silver items such as tableware are normally combined with copper. The reason for this is at a pure silver 99.9% grade, tableware would not be solid enough to use at the dinner table. Most tableware ratios will be a 92.5% silver/7.5% copper mixture, making it hard enough for use. You will also find that sterling silver will tarnish, or oxidize, when it is exposed to air. Pure Silver Pure Silver, also classified as fine silver, is graded at 99.9% pure. Most silver you will find at this level are silver bars and bullion, readily available as an investment item. Unlike sterling silver, pure silver will not tarnish. Plated Silver Silver plated items can also be found on the market. Silver plating is a process where a thin layer of silver metal is applied to the surface of metal, usually brass or nickel, through electrolysis or electroplating. Be wary of items that are silver plated and passed off as sterling silver. Knowing more about this precious metal and its applications can save you time and money when buying items made of silver. |
