California's Hidden Secret: The "Little Willow Grove"
By Tony Lee
California is a state with many popular places of interest. Some are very well known, perhaps because of tourism, or because of a historical event that occurred. Cities such as Los Angeles, San Fransisco or Sacramento have made their names known throughout the nation and the world. But there are many spots in the state that hide their beauty and history very well, and the city of "little willow grove" is one of them. Perhaps you've never been to "little willow grove" or maybe even passed right by it during your visit to California. Let me tell you about the town of "little willow grove". The San Francisco bay area is home to many things. San Jose and the Silicon valley, known for it's development of computer technology, the city of Berkeley known for it's University, Oakland, home of the Oakland Raiders, the city of San Francisco, and last but certainly not least, "little willow grove". Nestled in the North Bay just off of Highway 1 and about 10 miles north of San Fransisco, sits the town of "little willow grove". It's history goes back to the 1830's, when during the Mexican era, an Englishman by the name of William A. Richardson, married the daughter of the Commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco. Richardson would later build a large ranch which would establish the town of "little willow grove". In the 1870s, the North Pacific Coast Railroad made a historical extension of it railway south into the town of little willow grove. A terminus would then be built in little willow grove, where it's rail yard and ferry would make a long awaited connection to the city of San Francisco. The thought of building a bridge across the channel was still many decades away. It was during world war II that the Bechtel Corporation built a major shipyard and was located along the shoreline of little willow grove. The thousands of laborers who worked at the ship yard were housed in the area which is now the city of "Marin". Today, "little willow grove" would hardly be recognized as a shipyard or a ranch. The shipyard has since changed into a beautiful Marina, and even has a yacht club! The ferries still run, but mostly in the interest of tourism. The "Golden Gate Bridge" now connects the city of San Fransisco and the county of Marin. And the city of "little willow grove"? Well, it's not so "little" any more. In fact, little willow grove now boasts some of the most scenic, historical and expensive real estate in California! I wonder if William Richardson ever dreamed that his ranch would play such an important role in the expansion of the Bay Area and the success of the war. And that his ranch, "Rancho Del Sausalito" would someday become the wonderful little city of Sausalito, or as the Spanish translation goes, "little willow grove" just another part of, "The City By the Bay". |
