Caring For Your Lawn In Winter

By Tony Lee

Your front lawn should be one of the most cared for areas of your home. Not only does it provide value to your home, but it also enhances the appearance.

Caring for your lawn in winter is almost the same as in summer months. Since the fall brings on colder weather, there are some tips you should keep in mind when caring for your yard.

As the tree leaves change color, they beatify the landscape and give a hint that winter is approaching. The problem is that when they eventually fall from the trees and onto your lawn, they can create mold and mildew and harm the grass.

As the winter rolls in, you will find the grass grows at a much slower pace. Mowing your lawn should be done every 15 days or so, as opposed to every 5 to 10 days in summer. If you live in a climate that gets below freezing, you may want mow it much less frequently. This allows the top grass blades to grow and provide a blanket over the soil during freeze over.

Many home owners tend to leave their lawn unfertilized in winter, but it is best to apply a fertilizer that is high in potassium to help with root growth.

When December arrives, your lawn maintenance will be nothing more than watering and mowing. This is a good time to clean up your gardening tools and store them away for the
Winter, so when spring arrives you'll be set and ready to start again!
