Carving a Halloween Pumpkin
By Tony Lee
Halloween has been around for many years and began with the ancient Celtic holiday called Samhain, which means "summer's end". It's usually a night where parties are held, kids go out and "trick-or-treat", going door to door and collecting candy. Dressing up as ghouls and goblins, princesses, cartoon characters or even presidential figures, they stroll through the neighborhood yelling "trick-or-treat". The biggest symbol of Halloween is the pumpkin. Besides creating delicious pumpkin pies, they are also cut or "carved" into frightening figures known as "Jack-o-Lanterns". Before choosing your pumpkin, you must first decide what type of carving you will be doing. Will it be tall, wide, a face or figure? Once you decide on what your going to carve, you can then choose your pumpkin. Because pumpkins come in many sizes and shapes, there are many different patterns to choose from. Your pumpkin should be an even orange color all around, and free of dents or bruises. The stem should also be present. Some useful tools to have on hand are: -Sharp and narrow carving knives, one small and one large. -X-Acto knife with hand cutting saw. -Ice pick or nail -Marking Pens -Large scoop spoon The easiest way to carve a pumpkin is freehand. First choose the best side of the pumpkin to display. Then, with the marking pencil, sketch out your pattern on the face. With your carving knife, cut the top of the pumpkin off leaving a round or sided hole. Cutting on a 45 degree angle will leave a supporting edge on the top. It should be two thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. Next, remove the contents of the pumpkin, leaving a flat bottom to support the candle. Then cut out the face, eyes and mouth to complete your Jack-o-Lantern. Many patterns or stencils for Jack-o-Lanterns can now be found on the internet. Simply do a keyword search for them and download the pattern. After completing your Jack-o-Lantern, make sure you place it in a safe, but fun location and have a great Halloween! |
