Christmas is Nearing, but...
By Tony Lee
Yes, it's that time of the year again. The leaves on the trees are changing, the nights are getting colder and it's time to check the antifreeze in the car. Christmas is just around the corner. Soon you'll be saying to yourself, "where did Summer go?" and "I've got to get my Christmas list together!". Time for family get gatherings, traveling to see the grandparents, and the traditional "give and take" of the infamous fruitcake. Yummy! As soon as Halloween items hit the store shelves, it's a reminder that Christmas is coming. Why? Because merchants rush to start filling shelves with holiday items as well. Sure, Halloween costumes and decorations bring in big bucks, but getting customers in the Christmas spirit early on, gives them a jump start on profits. Gone are the days that the holiday season is a tradition, it seems that profit takes precedence. At least in the eyes of merchants wanting to make fast money in a slow economy. This year, just as is in the past, new products will hit the shelves. Designer clothing, new electronics, video games, game consoles and toys will surely highlight the market as Christmas arrives. But will there be a buying frenzy? How much will our nations economic situation effect Christmas sales? Some already believe that our current financial situation and a buyers lack of confidence, will cause shoppers to be very conservative with their holiday spending. Everything seems to be hitting us all at once: poor housing market, increasing unemployment numbers and high energy and food costs. I truly believe all is NOT lost. Sure, we may have to cut corners, costs and travel. I have faith that we will rebound from this dreary situation. I'm also confident that next year will be better, as already mentioned by economists. Regardless of how you shop, Christmas to many of us still means spending time with family and friends. It is traditionally a time to travel long distances to visit loved ones perhaps you have not seen in years. Christmas is a good time to reflect back on the past year, looking back on your successes and failures and make changes. So whatever your plans may be, let us not forget the spirit of the holidays and the reason for the season. Who knows, this might even bring back the spirit of Christmas, and perhaps even remind us that humble giving is what Christmas is about. That spending time with our loved ones has no price! |
