Christmas time in Nurnberg, Germany
By Tony Lee
Nurnberg's Christmas Market ("Christkindlesmarkt") During my short 26 years of military service, my job has taken my family and I to many places in the world. I was fortunate to have completed 3 tours in Europe, for a total of eleven years in such a historical part of the world. The warmest of memories is the beautiful city of Nurnberg, Germany, well known during the Christmas season for its Christkindlesmarkt.(Christmas Market).(known as Nuremberg by most Americans). Nurnberg's "Christkindlesmarkt" is one of Germany's oldest Christmas fairs. This unique event on Nurnberg's Main Market Square (Hauptmarktplatz) dates back to the mid 16th century. Located in the center of the "altstadt" (oldcity) Nurnberg, about 180 to 200 vendors decorated with red-and-white cloth, gave the Christmas Market "Little Town from Wood and Cloth". 200 stall holders present their traditional wares to sell such as Nurnberg spicy gingerbread, fruit loaves, bakery goods and sweets, typical Christmas articles such as Christmas tree angels, cribs, Christmas tree ornaments and candles, toys as well as arts and crafts products. One of the most unique and one-of-a-kind items include the "Nurnberg Plum People", little figures made from prunes. Most enjoyable are the rolls with Nurnberg roast sausages(Nurnberger Bratwurst)and mugs of Gluhwein (Red hot spiced wine). To walk along the merchants that come from all over the world ,and to see their wonderful items they offer to sell, brings on the greatest spirit of Christmas! The snow falls as the aroma of the Gluhwein and Bratwurst, and the sound of German Christmas music fills the air. This is by far, an annual family event you won't want to miss! |
