Cleaning Diamond, Silver and Gold Jewelry

By Tony Lee

Diamonds are one of the hardest natural materials on earth, but care should still be taken when cleaning your diamond jewelry.

When you purchased your jewelry, you probably received a periodic cleaning along with your warranty. Depending on the jeweler, you might even have a lifetime cleaning with your merchant. It’s best to take your jewelry in for a regular cleaning and inspection. It also gives the jeweler a chance to look at settings, prongs and clasps that may be apart of your item. Most big name jewelers are happy to perform the inspection and cleaning since you may have spent thousands of dollars at their store.

Although an in-store cleaning is ideal, there is some cleaning you can also do at home, using some household cleaners you most likely have already. You may not notice it right away, but jewelry can lose its shine from contact with your skin, lotions, perfumes and dirt. Even your jeweler will recommend that you clean your jewelry regularly. You may be surprised how different you old pieces will look after a good bath!

Step one before anything else is; conduct an inspection of any loose fittings, settings or clasps, just as your jeweler should. Make sure that nothing is loose or missing from wearing your jewelry items.

Gold is very easy to clean with warm water, a soft toothbrush and some liquid dish soap. Mix a solution of water and soap in a plastic container (not the kitchen or bathroom sink) and place your first jewelry item in it allowing it soak for about ten minutes. Then with the soft toothbrush, gently scrub the band or ring in a gentle circular motion. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a lint free soft cloth.

Silver is a bit more sensitive than gold and diamonds. Sterling silver items such as tableware and jewelry can become tarnished with exposure to the air, contact with your skin and certain food items. Cleaning and polishing silver are two different methods. Polishing silver is usually done with your table items such as knives, forks and spoons and tea sets. Jewelry is a somewhat different than tableware.

Using a mixture of baking soda and water, create a paste and lightly brush your sterling silver jewelry items with it, rinse well and pat dry. Another quick but effective way is to use common toothpaste to clean your silver jewelry, rinsing and drying them in the same manner. Silver is actually softer than it appears, so take care to avoid abrasive materials when cleaning the item.

Diamonds are easily cleaned with simple mixture of household ammonia and water. Combine about five parts ammonia to one part water in a glass bowl container and stir well. Line the bottom with a soft paper towel or cloth to prevent the item from getting scratched. Soak the item for about five minutes, and then scrub gently with a soft toothbrush in a circular motion. Rinse the item well in warm water to remove any residual ammonia and pat dry.

Jewelry can be timeless, and you may be preserving your jewelry collections to hand down to your children or grandchildren someday. Keeping it clean and in good shape will ensure that they receive it just like the day you bought it!
