Controlling Your Temper
By Tony Lee
Are you the type of person who just can't seem to control your outbursts? Do you find yourself losing it in front of friends and relatives during a heated conversation? Anger grows in all of us and can take on an ugly face in many ways. For some of us, controlling our temper isn't always easy and sometimes, impossible. It's not that anger is unnatural; it's just that we need to learn how to express and control it. Here are some ideas that you may want consider before you become red in the face. Breathing- Breathing is one of the most important body functions to control when angered. Try taking slow deep breaths, inhaling and counting one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four. Then exhaling and counting one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four. Do this for about one minute. (This also helps for insomnia! Try this if you find yourself staying awake at night.) Excercise- If your at your boiling point, the best way to quickly release stress and tension is go out and do something physically exerting. Got a basket ball hoop on the garage wall? Go out and shoot some hoops. Not into basketball? Try jogging around the block a few times. A short run helps to reduce the anger in you. Whether its tennis, golf or any type of sports activity, it should make a change in you when your finished. Take a Time Out- Time outs are not only for kids, they are for adults as well. We need a little corner time as well, just like our children. Get away from the situation for at least ten minutes or so. Doing this may even put your mind at a different prospective when you return. Think Before You Speak- Before you insert your foot in your mouth, think about what you’re going to say. Although the argument session may be temporary, you can easily say something devastating that may never heal. Repeat silently to yourself before making it verbal. This will also give you a chance to think and test it out. You will also find that your anger may diminish and the conversation may turn more diplomatic. Listen to Music- How many times have you heard the phrase "Mood Music"? There is a good reason for this; it simply puts us in a different frame of mind. Find your favorite CD or music station and take a break away from the argument. Put some headphones on and settle back and relax. There are many creative ways to avoid or reduce your anger. Thinking ahead and knowing how to channel that energy in a positive direction is also good for your health! |
