Does Aspirin Deter Heart Attacks?
By Tony Lee
After a short 27 year Army career, loads of PT (Physical training) every day, an absolutely healthy, and wholesome daily diet, I've now moved into the civilian world. Not that being a civilian is any less healthy; it's just that I find myself with many less rules to follow about physical fitness and health. I still manage to take a two mile run 3 times a week, get a good weight workout and watch what I eat. But for some reason, I still find myself worried about my health. Quite often we read or hear about a perfectly healthy man or women who die from an unexpected heart attack. Although countless studies have been done about heart disease and heart attacks, it still leaves medical experts puzzled. Some say it's hereditary, some say it's a matter of bad health habits or both. Regardless of the reasons, there is one positive note about reducing the effects of a heart attack. It's not some secret herb or drug, nor do you have to travel to some rogue foreign country to find it, in fact its right inside your medicine cabinet. It's commonly known as Aspirin. Most heart attacks are caused when a cholesterol layer of plaque in a heart artery breaks. When this happens, they attract platelets that trigger blood clotting. As the clot grows larger, it blocks the artery. This is when a heart attack occurs. Aspirin may be the first line of defense for a heart attack victim, because it inhibits platelets. These studies have shown that ingesting 325 mgs at the first sign of a heart attack can reduce the damage to the heart muscle almost immediately. 80 to 325 mgs taken daily they believe, may even prevent them from occurring. Although these studies offer great promise, I’ll still refrain from large amounts of my favorite “chocolate chip mint” ice cream and eating too many pastries from my favorite Panaderia. Come to think of it, I think I’ll even grab a chewable vitamin “C” tablet on my next run! Here’s to your health and Happy Veterans Day to my brothers and sisters around the world! |
