GPS Systems- Wish I Had one Then! - Part 2

By Tony Lee

In part one, I shared an experience I had as a youth back in the 1960's. What a horrible trip that was, driving in circles in the Southern California Desert!

Even to this day, when I here the term GPS, it reminds me of our trip that year. Had we been given GPS coordinates and a hand held GPS system, we would have found our piece of property in minutes! Of course in 1967, we hadn't even landed on the moon yet, and GPS technology was still years away.

Modern day technology has arrived. GPS systems can be found everywhere. And it should be no surprise. In fact if you purchase a new car, chances are that your vehicle will come standard with an in-dash GPS system. These systems can help you in a variety of different situations. Two of the most advertised systems that utilizes GPS technology are the LoJack Car Security System and OnStar By GM. These offer the driver a great sense of security not only from car theft, but personal safety as well. Lock your keys or kids in the car and a simple phone call unlocks the door. If your car gets stolen, a constant signal is sent to law enforcement agencies and can be intercepted by a police officer on patrol.

Many other systems are available that offer the driver directional driving instruction and can even "talk" you to the nearest Starbucks coffee shop. If your teenage son or daughter takes the family car out for the evening, you can monitor their whereabouts with a GPS system installed. Although I'm quite sure this feature isn't too popular with them.

What a technological leap we have made in just a few decades. Time does make a big difference in both electronic gadgetry and population expansion. I've since had a chance to visit my parents property: Remember, that "dirt parking lot" down in Southern California? I can honestly say, you don't need a GPS to find our lot, nor will you drive around in circles lost in the desert any more. In fact, it was the third fastest growing city in California in 2007. It now boasts great schools, great weather, affordibility, and a location among some of the top high tech industries making it one of the fastest growing cities in California.

Wouldn't you agree that the name " California City" says it all?

My! How time does fly!
