Growing Great Roses

By Tony Lee

There is no mystery to growing great rose bushes. And you've probably asked yourself "why do the neighbors roses look much better than mine"? Here are a few tips to having great roses.

The location is one important factor in growing a healthy rose bush. So many times I've seen a rose planted in a shady area, where it was starved of sunlight. Although it will survive in in-direct light, typically a rose bush should be located in an area where it receives at least 6 hours of good direct sunlight.

The soil type and characteristics of the soil is also important and locating an area where the soil is well drained is best. You may also want to check the PH of the soil as well. PH and soil testing kits can be purchased at your local garden center. A workable PH reading should be around 5.5-7.0.

I ensure that I water my roses often the first three to four weeks after planting. Roses are very thirsty plants and need plenty of hydration. One thing you want to avoid when watering is standing water. Leaving your rose bush in a puddle of water invites mildew. That's why it's best to have a soil that is well drained or has drainage.

Fertilizing your roses so they get their required nutrients is important. Just like people, they need their vitamins too. I start fertilizing about three months after I plant. One great addition to soil is mulch. Not only does it control moisture, but it helps stop weeds from sprouting as well. Using mulch along with fertilizer traps the nutrients that the plant needs. A layer of about three to six inches works quite well.

Pruning your roses is best done in spring. Cut the old dying branches off first and then the healthy branches, leaving about a half dozen or so. Cut them at a 45 degree angle at the point where they are about 1/4 inch thick.

These are just the "rose bush basics". Since their are many type of roses, you will need to seek advice on the type you choose and then based on your climate.

Growing a beautiful rose garden can be very rewarding and enhance the appearance of your home. It's also very rewarding when your neighbors come knocking at your door, asking you how you got such wonderful roses!
