Horse Back Riding in California
By Tony Lee
California is well known for it's mild climate, beaches, amusement parks, national parks and resources and of course, Hollywood. A visiting tourist, perhaps from another country, might visit Los Angeles and think that all we have to offer is "movie star glamor" and lots of "traffic". Another may visit San Francisco and think we are all about "cable cars" and "one way streets". But for those who choose to see the more "wild side" of California, might just do it on horseback. Much of California's history was sparked during the Gold Rush era of the late 1840's and on into the 1850's. But if you think about, her history would not have been as successful without the help of the horse. Settlers and starry eyed gold seekers would have found it difficult, if not impossible to reach the California Gold Country, had it not been for the horse. Railroads, food, supplies and even the mail were only possible because of this faithful animal. In fact, "The West" would have never been "Won" had it not been for the horse. But modern day California has changed. Over decades of technological advancements, an ever increasing population, and a desire to live the American Dream, California has a new face, culture and personality. One thing that hasn't changed however, is the joy of horseback riding. California boasts some of the best horse back riding experiences in the nation, if not the world. With the many different landscapes to choose from, it's no wonder that horseback riding is so popular and widely available. From the sandy beaches on the west coast shore to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada's, horse back riding is enjoyed by many each year. Although the horse is no longer used to carry homesteaders from the mid west, or pull wagon trains through snowstorms, this animal is still a big part of California culture. From the smallest rental stable to the largest dude ranch, horse back riding remains to be part of the most popular outdoor sports activity in the "Golden State". Many consider the dog as mans best friend. But as long as history has been recorded, the horse has been a benefit to mankind the world over. And as history has proven, it is the horse that truly deserves the title"Mans Best Friend".
