How The Life of a Pearl Begins

By Tony Lee

When people talk about owning Pearls, one thing comes to mind, and that is they only belong to the very well off and wealthy individuals. Pearls date back to the time of ancient Greece to Roman and British Empires. During that period, wearing pearl jewelry made with natural pearls was a sign of wealth and superiority among royal families.

But that seemed to change beginning in 19th Century when Mikmoto of Japan crafted his own bead-nucleating techniques of culturing pearls and harvesting in the deep saltwater of the Pacific Ocean. Because of his invention production of pearls increased as did the quality of pearls. With the use of bead-nucleating, pearls could be harvested on a larger scale with human help making them more available to buyers.

Since pearls are harvested in both fresh and salt water, many people wonder which are best. Fresh water pearls are generally less expensive due to the methods used to harvest them.

Salt Water Pearls that are man made are started by inserting a small piece of shell taken from "the mother of pearl" shell. This small piece of shell along with of piece of mantle tissue taken from another oyster is implanted and the process begins. The drawback to this process is that this method only produces one pearl.

Unlike the salt water pearl, the Fresh Water Pearl needs only a piece of mantle from another oyster. As the pearl matures and grows, it covers the mantle with layer after layer of nacre, an organic-inorganic composite, over the mantle. To produce multi pearls in one oyster, the grower can place more than one piece of mantle in the shell. This can result in more than one pearl produced by one shell.

Whether you choose to purchase fresh or salt water pearls, they are by far one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry one can own!
