Improving Your Car Sound System
By Tony Lee
As a kid growing up in California in the 60's, it was great. Most of my time was spent with my friends either working on our cars or heading to the beach. Of course their was time for school and education as well. In fact we were the crowd at school working in the Auto Shop, Metal shop or what ever class we could take that would enhance our car building skills. I remember the year I took home economics. Although I got laughs from my buddies, it was a great chance to round up the girls for a day at the beach. Much has changed from the those days when it comes to car sound systems. Back then, we didn't have all the fancy electronic gadgets that we have to today. I guess the biggest change has been not only the model of car, but the acoustics that enhance todays sound systems. You might say it's like comparing an empty tin can to a well developed professional sound room. I can recall having a "loud" sound system was enough to be considered a "quality" car stereo sound system. But it lacked the acoustics that todays dampening materials, strategically placed speakers and technology provide. Unfortunately, some still think that volume qualifies a sound system, the louder it is, the better it will sound. This is the furthest thing from the truth. A good example is listening to classical music in your car. A good sounding symphony will sound even better if your car has a good quality speaker system installed. Unless you own a luxury car, chances are that your "factory" sound system could use an improvement. Many car owners who look to improve the sound quality of their car stereo systems realize this. The first thing you should do is examine your current car sound system. Just as a photographer understands the lens of the camera is important for picture quality, your speaker system is important for sound quality. Although many other factors play a role in improving car audio systems, this is the first place to look. Check to see what type of stock speaker system you currently have. What type of enclosure does it have, if any? Are they name brand quality speakers? Is there any sound dampening material around them? As you inspect your system, keep in mind that you most likely have door mounted and back window speakers. If your an SUV owner, you may have up to eight speakers throughout your vehicle. One caution for new car owners: Before you go removing door panels and other parts inside your vehicle, make sure it does not void any warranty that comes with your car. If in doubt, refer to your owners manual or contact your car dealer. As you shop for your new speakers, make sure you plan for the future. Shop for a speaker system that can later be improved with other add ons, such as amplifiers and signal processors. You may want to talk to the salesperson about these items and let them know you intend to perhaps purchase these items at a later date. Compatibility is the key here. If you've got the cash and want to go all out, complete systems are available on the market as well. Many other gadgets are available to juice up your audio system. It's very easy to spend thousands of dollars on electronics to do this. But for those with a small pocket book, this is a good starting point to make a great improvement to your current stock sound system! |
