Is That a Real Pearl?
By Tony Lee
Pearls are one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that you can buy. They can be purchased as a necklace, bracelet, and earrings or even as an addition to a diamond ring. Buyers must choose from literally thousands of designs of pearl jewelry available on the market today. One big concern they have is authenticity of the pearl they are buying. Pearls are can be grown in two types of water environments; Fresh Water and Salt Water. The cultured fresh water pearl can be found in many different colors, more in fact than the salt water pearl. You may have seen some fresh water pearls in white, off white, pink, orange and even a champagne color. Fresh water pearls very rarely turn out to be perfectly round and usually take on an oval or tear drop shape. The process of farming fresh water pearls in muscles can produce more than one pearl at a time. Salt water pearls are grown in oysters and different from the fresh water pearl; only produce one pearl for each oyster. Most buyers find saltwater pearls to be higher in quality than the fresh water pearl. Salt water pearls have a more round shape and can be found in a glossy off white color making them more appealing to the buyer. Because salt water pearls are rarer, they normally have a higher price tag. Defining a genuine pearl over a fake pearl normally can be detected by its texture. Genuine pearls are always cultured or naturally grown. First take the pearl in your hand and bounce it in your palm. Real pearls are heavier than a fake glass bead that is comparable in size. The next test you can make is to take the pearl and rub it against your upper front teeth. A genuine pearl will have a gritty texture to it, as opposed to a smooth surface. A close inspection with a magnifying glass should reveal flaws in a real pearl. A fake pearl or glass bead will appear flawless. Taking two pearls and rubbing them together should feel rough and resistant. A simple close look under a bright light should reveal a shine from inside the pearl. A fake pearl will only shine on the surface.
