Keeping Your House Smelling Fresh

By Tony Lee

Ok, so you've done a good thorough cleaning of your house. A few days later, you discover that it's got that same odor back that never seems to go away. Here are some tips on keeping it smelling clean and fresh all the time.

Many odors originate from places in your house that you really don't see. More than likely, you've noticed each room in your house has its own unique smell. The key to keeping them smelling clean is to neutralize the odor.

The Kitchen
Cooking is the biggest cause of unwanted odors in your house. When you cook, odors leave your kitchen and stick to the Furniture, walls, curtains, drapes and carpeting. Prevention is key. If possible, open all windows and run the overhead fan while cooking.

Although this might prevent the odor from spreading, you will also need to focus on areas that cleaning may eliminate. A good cleaning beneath your refrigerator for starters. This is where food particles gather and grow bacteria. Placing a box of baking soda inside your fridge does wonders for eliminating odors. Simply remove the top off of the box and be sure to write the date on the box. Every seven days, remove the box and pour an inch off of the top. Replace the box completely each month.

Cooking ranges are a gathering place for bacteria as well. focus on underneath and range top for cleaning.

Look under your kitchen sink. Is there a musty smell? Another good spot for a box of baking soda.

Kitchen trash cans are notorious for bad odors. Buy one with a collapsing lid, and place a "stick" deodorizer inside.

Bathrooms
Very few people enjoy cleaning a bathroom. But once it's clean, it's easy to keep it smelling fresh. Placing a deodorizer inside your toilet tank works well. Use a trash can with a lid and place a "stick" deodorizer inside. There are also "stick" deodorizers that you can place inside your bathroom cabinets.

Bedrooms
Focus your cleaning efforts to underlying areas such as under beds, closets and drawers. Using a mixture of liquid laundry fabric softener and water, spray a light mist under beds and on curtains. Make sure you test it on a small area of your carpet and curtain first, before doing this. It may cause discoloration on certain fabrics. You can also use this on bedspreads and inside your closets. Then apply "stick" deodorizers in your closet space.

Living Rooms
One area that is often neglected is underneath furniture, such a couches and chairs. Make sure you vacuum underneath these items once a month. To help keep it smelling fresh, use a fabric softener mix behind couch cushions and pillows. You can also apply a mist to curtains and drapes. Again, make sure it doesn't cause discoloration by testing it on a small area first.

Candles and heated Scents
Candles can also be used to create a wonderful scent throughout the house. Care must be taken as an open flame can be dangerous. Another method is to simmer herbs or spices in water on your stove. Just as the unwelcome smell of fish sticks to the living areas of your house, so will the delightful scent herbs or spice.
