Keeping Your Porcelain Clean
By Tony Lee
Porcelain is enjoyed by households around the world as a decorative item and can be commonly found in cabinets, bathrooms, in your kitchen and even the porcelain bride and groom on a wedding cake. Keeping your porcelain clean is easy if you know what to use on them. One way to keep your porcelain decor clean is to keep them in a display case. Leaving your porcelain plates and cups out on a shelf is fine, although it will require dusting. If you decide to build or buy shelving for your collection, locate them away from doors or windows that open frequently. This helps reduce dust that settles on the shelf. We keep some of our decorative porcelain items in small cabinets that I've purchased in stores or on the internet. This keeps them from collecting dust and makes it them easy to clean. The cabinets or display cases I've bought have double hinged doors and make it easy to remove items for cleaning or rotation. Cabinets also enhance the interior of your home as well as display your valuable porcelain items in a near dust free environment. The size of the cabinet display case will depend on the size of your home, the item size and personal taste. I highly recommend using a display case because it also adds value to your porcelain items. Initial Cleaning Many porcelain items I've purchased come from yard sales and flea markets and require cleaning. Using a warm mild dish soap solution usually does the job. Make sure you rinse any rough particles off of the surface first that may linger on the item. Place the item in the soap solution and soak it first. I've found using soft lint free clothes works best. If you have a 100% cotton cloth available, you can use that. With another clean cotton cloth, pat dry the surface to avoid water spots. Delicate Areas Some porcelain items have delicate parts to them, such as an angel’s wing or hands and feet. When cleaning these types of figures, you can use a cotton swab or q-tip to clean these areas. These also work great cleaning small grooves and crevices on a porcelain figure. Items that are hand painted can be difficult to clean and caution should be used. Avoid placing any cleaning soaps on or around these areas. For porcelain dolls with clothing that can't be removed, I've used oxy-clean and it works wonders. Mix a solution of oxy-clean and spray on lightly, then rinse well. Tough Stains I've also brought home some pretty nice pieces that required a little more than just warm soapy water. In the case of oils stains or grease, you may want to try a liquid laundry detergent to remove these types of stains. A baking soda paste and a cotton swab also works well to remove deep stains. If possible, try using cleaners that are non-acidic. Although glass materials are resistant to acids, you will find that they will dull the finish on a nice shiny piece of porcelain. Many cleaners will state specifically that they should NOT be used on porcelain surfaces. Repairing Porcelain Although it is possible to buy porcelain repair kits, one major draw back I've experienced is that you can never recover the piece back to its original color or shape. Taking it to a professional is another option, but it is costly. The best advice to collecting and keeping these fine works of art from breakage is the location you choose to display them. A location out of reach from pets and children is a good start. Collecting fine porcelain can be a very rewarding hobby. Keeping your porcelain clean not only enhances its beauty, but helps it last for years to come! |
