Largest Catfish Claim or Just Another Fish Story?

When I was just a young kid back in the 70's, I loved to go fishing for trout and catfish. I'm sure like most of you, the sport of fishing offered a unique challenge for a number of reasons. First, your going after game that you really can't see. Second, fish always taste better when "you" catch it. So off I'd go, thinking to myself "today, I'm going to be smarter than those fish and come back with "the big one". Alas, as the sun begins to set and the day comes to an end, you go home empty. (And hungry) Well here is an account of some fisherman in northern Thailand who had one lucky day of fishing on May 1, 2005! While fishing on the Mekong River on May 1, they netted a Catfish almost nine feet long and according to villagers was the "size of a grizzly bear". (Grizzly Bears in Thailand? I didn't know they had Grizzly Bears in Thailand!) In any case, the fish weighed in at whopping 646 pounds! According to some experts they say the fish belongs to the species known as the Mekong giant catfish, and may be the largest catfish ever caught. (Ya think?) It took one hour to bring the "Little fellow" in. After attempts to try to keep the fish alive failed, the fish was cut up and shared with the people of the village. It's a good think they got pictures before the villagers ate the fish. That would be one hard "fish story" to tell without any proof. So much for the one that "didn't get away". |
