Leave your Heart in San Francisco

By Tony Lee

The city of San Francisco is host to millions of tourists each year. It is estimated that some 16 million visitors come from all over the world to see one of the great icons of California and the United States.

But what is it that makes San Francisco so popular?
You can ask many people this question and each will have a different answer. First off, San Francisco is a wonderful city to be in any time of the year. The sights, sounds of Fisherman's wharf, the great Golden Gate Bridge, the sounds and feel of a ride on the cable cars, the beaches that connect San Fransisco to the Pacific Ocean and world renowned restaurants, make San Fransisco such an enchanting city. It's a city that simply cannot be seen in just a day.

Fisherman's Wharf covers six blocks along the San Francisco waterfront, add much to the image of San Francisco. Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square, along with the wharf, see much of the tourist traffic each year. Here you can be entertained by street performers, souvenir shops and fantastic seafood restaurants. You can also take a "Bay Tour" on the Red and White Fleet Ferries, that will take you on a ride around the San Fransisco bay, Alcatraz Island and underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed man made objects in the world and an engineering marvel. It is considered a "must do" activity in the city, as it is the host to both car and pedestrian traffic. A visit to San Fransisco is not complete without a stroll across it.

Alcatraz Island, a historical landmark, is located in the heart of the San Fransisco Bay. Alcatraz was once a prison and housed some of the most dangerous criminals. It now as serves as a popular tourist attraction and can only be accessed by boat. Give your self at least four hours for both the boat ride and tour.

Union Square is the United States' third-largest shopping area. Union Square was set aside as a public plaza in 1849. It was also the location of pro-Union Civil War rallies in 1860's. In the 1900's it became the city's center for shopping. Today, it boasts many upscale stores and hotels. Here you'll find many fine art and clothing stores, but beware, the items are pricey!

The Cable Cars are another must see, or "must ride" in this case, as you continue your adventure in San Fransisco. They are not looked upon as a mode of transportation, but a destination, as the cable car serves as another icon of San Francisco.

Chinatown and it's main entrance on Grant Street, will take you from a busy western city, into a active, colorful Chinese culture in just a few footsteps. Chinatown is a world of it's own, and is the center attraction of San Francisco. With it's countless Chinese restaurants, souvenir shops and art stores, it's best to set aside at least half the day to see it all.

Lombard Street, known as the "crookedest" street and has been a part of many action and adventure movies. Although it's actually not the most crookedest street, it's appearance and beauty makes it a photographers dream. Lined with colorful flower beds and trees, it winds down between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets.

Although I was born in the San Francisco bay Area, the "City by the Bay" never grows old. Each visit I make to the city is a new adventure and a new discovery. I love to see the faces and expressions of the tourists the world over that visit her each year. But San Fransisco was not built of "just western culture". It it the success of many cultures throughout the world that makes San Fransisco what it is today.

San Fransisco has a uniqueness not found anywhere else in the world. It has the most picturesque landscapes and known for it's diverse culture. It's no wonder that San Fransisco is the spot most favored by tourists from outside the United States. One visit to this wonderful city will capture your heart. As even Tony Bennett himself, "left his heart in San Fransisco"!
