My first "Bat Experience"

By Tony Lee

It was the late 1960s and a new TV series had just aired across the nation, simply called "Batman". The craze was on! Batman T-shirts, Batman Lunch Boxes. It seemed back then EVERYTHING was "Bat" something or other. Starring Adam West and Burt Ward, it also featured a streamlined, mysterious shiny black car named the "Batmobile ".

As a kid in the 60's living in southern California, one of my fondest memories was an opportunity to see the actual Batmobile while on display at a local mall. A local radio station was sponsoring the event, and all my friends and I were all ranting about the chance to just "touch" this treasure.

It was the opportunity of a lifetime as we arrived at the mall that Saturday morning and took our place in line. As we waited, it seemed like forever. Hundreds of camera flashes were going off and we could feel the electricity in the air. Our eyes must have been the size of silver dollars as we leaned on the rope that kept us only inches from this magnificent creation. It was nothing like seeing it on TV, it was much more, it was almost magical!

The drive home after the event must have been a nightmare for our parents. Besides having to deal with traffic, they also had to deal with us sharing the oohs and ahhs of all of us in the back seat, as we expressed our excitement. What a day that was for all of us.

The Batmobile of yesterday has survived many changes, just as the characters themselves have. For a guy like me, there will always be one Batman and Robin, one Joker, Riddler, Catwoman and one Mr. Freeze. As much as I love the modern day Batman movies, I'll never forget the day that I became a part of "Bat History"!

So whats in store for the future of the dynamic duo? Will the Batmobile continue to evolve? Will the Caped Crusaders someday meet their match? Time will only tell. But for those of us who can't get enough of these timeless heroes, I guess theres only one thing to do. "Tune in tomorrow, same bat-time, same bat-channel"!
