My First Remote Control Plane

As a kid I was always fascinated by Remote Control Aircraft and attended as many model RC shows as I could. My first Remote Control airplane was a model kit that I purchased at a hobby store called "Hobbies Unlimited". I loved to just walk into the store and gaze at all the RC models that hung from the ceiling, appearing as if they were actually in flight. I must have gone into the store hundreds of times before I made my purchase, always aware of a new display model or a change in the store showcase at the front counter. My visits were so frequent in fact, the store owner would often offer me a job at the store, as a joke of course. Since I was just a lad of fourteen, my funds were a bit short and it took me a a while to come up with enough to buy my first plane. At last, I would have my chance to build and fly my own RC plane and fly it like the "Big Boys". My first kit was a Cessna 150, a small but fairly easy to fly aircraft that I had my eyes on since the beginning. I had flown similar models belonging to friends and thought that this would be the best model to start off with. There's just something about building an RC airplane and knowing that your work was a success as you watch it take its first flight! In todays market of RC planes, cars and boats, the selection
available now is staggering. Yes, my Cessna 150 can still be found in hobby stores along with monster cars, monster trucks and helicopters. Who would have thought back in the late 1960's, that a nitro burning Monster Car would ever exist! RC model building is a great hobby, regardless of age. And for us old guys, it gives us a chance to be a kid again! |
