My First Ride on a Horse (Part Two)
By Tony Lee
(Continued from part one) It had been an uneventful afternoon so far, and I had actually enjoyed the ride on Red. The ride home would be easy, cross a few fields, two shallow streams and one small hill. As a horse, Chief was much bigger than Red. Since I was no expert on horses, I can just describe Chief as "muscular". There was something odd about his body form, almost frightening. As we began our return ride, Chief, rather than a gradual start, gave me a jolt as I gently tapped his side to get him started. So sudden in fact, I nearly fell off. I kinda took that as a wakeup call, as Byron would glance back with strange smile on his face. Byron explained to me that Chief knew the way home, as they had made this ride many times before. "When we reach the crest of the hill, I'll let you lead" said Byron. "Chief likes to show off, and sometimes he gets excited, too excited" Byron continued, "So just hang on". Reaching the hilltop meant that we could see the house and stables in the distance, and if we could see it, so could Chief. I could already sense something wasn't right, as Chief began what I can only describe as "a dance". He began side stepping, with quick kicks and bobbing his head up and down. Byron reached the crest first, and had halted Red at the top to wait for us. By then I was already holding onto Chiefs reigns with one hand and his mane with other. At that moment, Byron yelled, "Go Chief"! If you've ever seen a top fuel dragster come off of the starting line when the light turns green, that was me on Chief. Had I not had a "life saving" hold on his mane, I would have kissed the dirt right then and there. It was the sound of his hooves gripping into the dirt on take off that made such a strange sound, almost unnatural. I use the phrase "take off", because that's what it felt like. As we approached the crest, I felt like we might go airborne while Byron sat on Red cheering us on by. I can't remember what I was yelling as we shot past Byron, but I can guess it contained a few choice four letter words. Down the hill we went, gaining speed as I now placed a death grip on as much mane and saddle horn as I could grab and held on for my life! With Byron and Red now in chase, Chief was gaining full speed as we continued down the hill. In fact Chief had gained such a smooth stride, you could of handed me a glass of wine and I wouldn't have spilled one drop. (What I really needed was a good shot of tequila!) With just a few hundred yards to go, Chief decided to cut across a few of the neighbors yards, with me still hanging on, dodging trees and branches as I watched them whisk by. Although he had slowed, my hands were frozen to his mane and anything else I could hold on to while screaming at the top of my lungs. The only road left to cover was a long driveway and a gate to the stable yard. Without hesitation, Chief made the last turn and picked up speed. It was obvious to me Chief had to make a decision, either stop, go clean through, OR jump the gate. Any normal person would not have put me on a crazy out of control horse, but my cousin Byron was anything but normal. Here I was on a rocket with four legs bound and determined to make it home. As we approached the gate, natural instinct took over and the only thing I could think of was jumping off. I'm sure anyone watching this crazy event, would have thought this was something out of a cartoon. It was at that moment that this crazy horse leaped into the air and jumped the gate, with me flying off the saddle and landing in the yard. The first thing I noticed was an uncanny silence. Was I dead? Did Chief actually jump the gate with me on him? It took me a minute or two to come to my senses. With the exception of a strange ringing in my ears, I hadn't broken any bones. As I looked up, I could see a silhouette against the setting afternoon sun. It was my cousin Byron. "Are you alright?" he asked. "Of course I'm alright, you idiot", I responded. "what kind of trick was that?", I asked. "Well" said Byron, "I wanted to explain to you how he got his name". "But I figured if I'd let him show you, it would be more fun". "He does it to me every time, that's why I lay a good bed of hay on the other side of the gate". "Since he always seems to be in charge on the ride home, Chief was a fitting name for him". A few minutes later, we were both laughing about everything. I guess you could say my first ride was an adventure. With my cousin Byron, everything was like that. I learned a lesson that day. If you ever go horse back riding, make sure the horses name isn't "Chief". You might get more than you bargained for! |
