Old Town Sacramento: A Historical Landmark
By Tony Lee
The California Gold Rush was one of the most unique events in the state history. It attracted people from all over the United States, and the world who were in search of gold. In early 1848, the citizens of California were the first to start working the ground and streams for gold. Most farm workers, Native Americans, Asians and Europeans, were the first gold miners of the rush in California. Many families would also work together to mine the precious metal. It was not unusual for women and children to be found panning next to the men. The city of Sacramento played an important role in the gold rush era and still reflects many traditions in "Old Town" Sacramento. Not only is "Old Town" a popular tourist attraction, it is also a National Landmark, with dozens of historic Gold Rush-era buildings and a portion dedicated as a State Historic Park. With its cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks, businesses are flourishing every year with tourists and many restaurant connoisseurs. You can even book a river cruise on a paddle wheeler or take a horse and buggy ride. Along with western style nostalgia, there are many great bars with exciting musical entertainment. "Old Town" is also home to the California State Railroad Museum, one of the best museums in the country. With wonderfully restored locomotives and railroad cars, it serves as the one of the towns main attractions. "Old Town" Sacramento is a stop you will surely want to make when your in the State Capitol! |
