Protecting Antique Silver
By Tony Lee
I've been to many garage sales looking for Antique Silver items and found many items tarnished from either not being stored properly or misuse. If you own silver or silver flatware, the best way to prevent tarnishing is to be aware of what causes it. Certain types of food items such as eggs or any other item containing a sulfur compound or ingredient, will cause tarnishing. One other hazard is simply the air we breathe. Exhaust emissions from cars produce sulfur gases that also cause tarnishing. Be sure to wash the item with warm water and dry thoroughly as soon as you are finished. If your planning on storing these items away for extended periods, use a cotton towel or cloth to handle the item while cleaning. Natural body fluids from your skin can aid in the tarnishing process. Avoid using bare hands to handle your silverware before placing it in your showcase. Humidity is another enemy of silver. Using silica gel pads will reduce the humidity in a storage environment. Storing your silver in a closed drawer lined with a 100% cotton towel or cloth is highly recommended. A zip lock bag is an excellent extra measure of protection for your items. Placing a silica gel pad inside the drawer will help keep moisture under control. Never store or mix silver items with other metals. Proper storage and care for your silver flatware will help it last for years to come! |
