Protecting Your Digital Camera from the Elements

By Tony Lee

A Digital Camera can last a lifetime if you take the time to protect it from Mother Nature.

Some of the best pictures I've taken were outside on a cold ,wet, rainy day. For those of you who are sports enthusiasts, it's a fact of life. Eventually you will find your self in the middle of a rain storm and need to protect your camera.

There are a number of things you can do to minimize the affects of water in and on your camera.

Many manufacturers are making water proof plastic cases that allow the camera to be placed inside. This is the ideal solution when it comes to keeping your camera dry. Although this concept is not new, there are limitations to the models of cameras that these cases fit. For example, there is the DiCAPac WP-710 Waterproof Case available for many point and shoot models that sells for around $30.00.

If you don't have a access to a custom waterproof case, then shielding your camera would be the next option. By simply wrapping your camera with a plastic bag will help keep it dry. A rubber band or tie around the lens assembly will keep it fastened to the camera body well enough to photograph.

If for some reason, your camera should become wet or damp, never place it in the case right after your photo session. Once indoors, leave it out to air dry overnight at room temperature.

Keeping your digital camera dry on those rainy days will give you years of use and many memories to come!
