Pyramids of Teotihuacán
By Tony Lee
In many of my travels to foreign countries, I've always favored cities that are rich in history and culture. One of the countries that make my list is Mexico. Not only is it easily accessible, but very cheap to visit. Mexico is a country that will take you back in time in many ways. Much of its history has stood the test of time and one can appreciate its architecture and beauty. Many cities such as Teotihuacan, are close to cities of modern civilization, yet ages apart. Teotihuacan is located just a few miles from Mexico City and probably one of most exciting archaeological finds. Teotihuacan was home to the Aztecs. Translated into English, Teotihuacan, simply means “the place where men become gods.” You can experience the wonder of its history as you stroll along one of its popular attractions, the "Avenue of the Dead" (Calzada de los Muertos.) as you explore its many pyramids. Known as the third largest pyramid in the world, is The Pyramid of the Sun (Piramida del Sol). Built in the year 2 A.D., it is believed that the pyramid was built to honor the birth of the Sun and Moon gods. Climbing to the top and experiencing the view is amazing. A smaller version, named The Pyramid of the Moon (Piramida de la Luna) is built near The Pyramid of the Sun and is on higher ground. The site is large, with many places to explore such as historic plazas, palaces and courtyards. Be sure to check out the Palace of the Quetzal-Butterfly. This palace, thought to be used as living quarters by the high priests, is one of the most stunning and was one of the most important living places in the city. It is beautifully decorated and has well preserved frescos (paintings done on plaster on walls or ceilings.) With all of Mexico's history to appreciate, Teotihuacan is a city you won't want to miss! |
