Retiring in Mexico
By Tony Lee
When you think of retirement, what comes to mind? Some consider a home that’s paid off, a pension, and being debt free as requirements for a happy retirement. For those of us living in today’s economy, retirement has become a far reaching dream. Many now realize that retiring at the age of 50 or even 60 is far less possible than it was just 5 years ago. Many Americans are finding that living south of border in Mexico is not only cheaper, but offers a retirement lifestyle that cannot be obtained in the United States. It is estimated that more than 1 million Americans now live in Mexico. For example, annual property taxes for a $300,000 home runs about $300! Many comforts that we share here in the U.S. are becoming increasing available in a country so rich in culture. It's not unusual for a retired couple to live in Mexico for less than $1,000 a month in a three bedroom home with a gardener and house keeper. Many American communities now exist in Mexico, providing the luxuries we share here in the U.S. such as internet, cable and satellite TV. It is not unusual to find American Style Shopping in many of the resort towns such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. Many working class Americans now populate many areas of the Baja California area of Mexico such as Ensenada, which is only a 90 minute drive from San Diego. You've probably heard of the low cost medical care offered in Mexico. Americans love the fact that not only is it much cheaper than the U.S., but they also love the fact that medical care is much more personalized than here in the U.S. Is Mexico in your future? Perhaps it's something you may want to look into! |
