Storing your ATV or Bike for the Winter
By Tony Lee
Many ATV riders who live in cold climate areas find it wise to store away their ATV or Motorcycle for the Winter. This includes finding it a good home in a storage shed or garage until Spring. Heres a short check list of things to consider when storing your ride. This applies to both ATVs and Motorcycles. Clean the Bike This is especially important if you live near the coast where salt water could cause corrosion. A good cleaning of your bike will help prevent this corrosion. Make sure you focus on the small cracks and crevices on the frame. All dried mud and oil should be removed. If you have access to a steam cleaning machine, this is ideal. Be cautious when spraying around electrical and fuel systems, as the high pressure sprayer could cause damage. Carefully dry the bike off and apply a hand wax to complete the cleaning. Oil and Fuel Change the oil and oil filter. Also make sure you change the fuel filter and add a gas stabilizer to the fuel. Run your bike for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates into the fuel system. One extra step you may want to take is to turn the fuel petcock and ride your bike until it stalls. This will empty the carburetor and jets of any fuel and prevents fuel from turning into a "varnish" inside the fuel system. Battery and Electrical Remove and store the battery. Make sure the posts are clean along with the battery terminals. Check water levels and charge the battery if needed. Store the battery in a well ventilated area, away from gas water heaters and off of the ground. Placing it on the ground will cause the battery to discharge. If you must store it on the ground, rest it on a thick block of wood. Make sure the area you choose will not allow the battery to freeze. Make a good inspection of electrical wiring on your bike. Replace any frayed or dry rotted wires. Storage Check all tire pressures before storing your bike. A storage shed or garage should be used to store it. If one is not available, it doesn't hurt to ask a neighbor who may have some extra space to store it. It should never be left outside, especially when temperatures go below freezing. If possible, place your bike on blocks keeping it off of the suspension system. Proper storage of your ATV or motorcycle is important. Taking an hour or two to prepare it will guarantee that it will be ready to go for a another Summer of fun! |
