Taking Photos for ebay Ads
By Tony Lee
The sluggish economy has forced many folks to find another source of income to make ends meet. Digging deep into their closets and garages, they look for items to sell on ebay, the largest auction site on the internet. Many are first time sellers, having bought many items from ebay, but never been on the selling side. An ebay ad has many facets to producing an eye catching, jaw dropping attraction. The item of course is important, but the photo is where the buyers eye usually lands first. It's not difficult to produce a great photo if you keep a few things in mind. Sadly, I've seen many photos of items on ebay that were very poor, due to lack of light or a poorly thought out background. Some however, are quite amusing. Digital cameras on kitchen tables, guitars on backyard picnic tables, cars in driveways with trashcans next to them and trash on the ground, laptops on the living room dark colored easy chair. Not a very impressive photo layout for something your promoting. HOW you take the picture will depend on WHAT you sell. In general, the best setting for most items that you have is a white background with little or no shadow. White foam core board is ideal for background settings. I normally cut a piece and construct a custom miniature photo studio box, leaving the top and front off. I lay the item in the center, and place my light source over the open top, and take the picture. Focusing in on the image, I make sure that the inside corners and edges stay out of the picture. The white sides and back provide even lighting as I capture the image. Black foam board is ideal for bright colored jewelry items. Adjusting the light is key in getting jewelry items to photograph well. You may want to adjust your light source and experiment with different light levels to get the best clear photo. This same technique can be used outdoors in natural sunlight as well. Again, shift your box at different angles to get the best pictures, without creating a shadow. Once you get the hang of creating backgrounds, you will eventually develop your own ideas. A well planned photo shoot for your ebay items will increase your chances of selling them, and putting extra cash in your pocket! |
