The Beauty of Porcelain
By Tony Lee
When my family and I travel on vacation, we love visiting the gift shops and stores of the local area. Wouldn't you agree that one of the most beautiful items that we see on the shelf is the porcelain? The miniature figurines, thimbles, and many other porcelain items seem to be the best part of the store. It's easy to find many souvenirs plates, cups, and vases also made of porcelain. Porcelain is a type of ceramics long known for its beauty and strength. Most people know it as "china", or "chinaware", because it is believed to be first made in China. Porcelain is recognized by its whiteness, and delicate appearance. Because of its hardness and durability, porcelain is also used for manufacturing electrical insulators and laboratory equipment. Best known for its beauty, porcelain is used to make flower vases, tableware, priceless figurines and many other decorative items. You'll know you’re holding a well made piece of art, when you gently tap it, causing a bell-like ring ringing sound. It can also be used as a cosmetic repair in dentistry. This delicate material is made by heating raw materials, (clay) in the form of kaolin, in a kiln. Generally speaking there are three main types of porcelain: hard paste (being the true porcelain), soft paste or china, and bone china. Because we love to collect porcelain, my wife and I have a separate cabinet that we display our china porcelain items. Not only does it add a decorative flair to our home, but it also provides a friendly reminder of all the places we’ve been! |
