Tips for the First Time Skier
By Tony Lee
Learning how ski can be an exciting opportunity to learn a new sport. The first thing you need to consider first is the equipment that is involved in the sport. It's best to speak with a friend who is a skier, and has some experience. He or she can suggest beginner equipment that will get you started. To be properly outfitted for the slopes can be quite expensive so perhaps buying used equipment might be to your benefit. Another option is to rent your equipment on the ski slopes. This will give to the chance to see if skiing is really for you. Almost all resorts have ski rentals and in fact make big money just from those types of sales. My first attempt at skiing was just that, an attempt. Of course all my buddies brought their video cameras and captured every embarrassing moment. They had convinced me that if I jumped on to the "expert" slope, I would learn much faster. Leave it to my Army buddies to talk me onto the "Hill from hell". "Don't start on the sissy slope" they told me. Not only did I almost kill my self, but I neglected to learn the basics, like stopping and turning. Many resorts offer free basic lessons on getting started on the slopes. You'll have to pay for the more advanced lessons. Naturally, the beginner’s course is the best place to begin. Before going out for the first time, make sure you do some stretching exercises. Exposure to cold air is the best way to increase your chances of injury if you fall. Your muscles need a good warm up to be prepared for the cold. And if your like I was, your gonna kiss a lot of snow the first time on the slopes. A good warm up also prepares you for all the pain your gonna feel the next day. Step one: Learn how to stop! Don't go to step two until you learn step one. It's that simple. One easy way to stop is to point your feet towards each other, bring the ski tips together. Learn to walk on the skis by alternating one foot in front of the other. Use your ski poles if needed. This will get you accustomed to standing on the skis as well. Use a slope with a gentle incline to get used to gliding on the snow pack by moving in a zig zag pattern. This will keep you from picking up too much speed. One tip I got from an instructor to improve balance, was kneeling. While your in a forward motion, practice squatting by bending at the knees and tucking your ski poles under your arms. Return to the standing position, and then repeat. This helped me a lot at first to develop balance and build my confidence. Learning this movement also helps you avoid that unexpected tree limb that always seems to jump out in front of you. Some learn fast, some learn slowly. I found that learning how to ski, is just like learning how to ride a bicycle. With a little practice and patience, you'll be gliding along in no time. You'll soon be hoping for an early snow each winter, just so you can hit the hills. One last piece of advice: If you happen to run into a bunch of Army guys trying to give to ski tips, RUN!
