Toy Soldiers
By Tony Lee
I can remember as a kid, I owned a lot of toys. Although my parents were not very well off, I always managed to convince them, that I "just needed" that new monster or space ship that my buddy next store just got. I guess you could say its kinda like "keeping up with the Joneses", but on a kids scale. I even had a strategy: If I could get my buddy to bring his new toy over to the house, my parents would see just "how cool" it was, and perhaps want to buy one for me. The next step would be to get them to the toy department and impress them with the item as it sat on the shelf. If I was really lucky, I'd catch a parent and their kid standing in line buying the toy. "That would qualify it", I would think as I planned my psychological attack. If I could just let em see how happy the other kid was, I'd have it in the bag. If that didn't work, there was the silent pout tactic. You know, the old "sad face cause my best friend just died" look. I wasn't a tantrum thrower like some of the other kids I've seen, so if the fore mentioned plan failed, I was just going to do without. Years later, I realize what a bad idea that was, because now my own kids play the same trick on me. I guess it's just in the genes. Although some of the more expensive toys may have have been financially out reach, one great toy that I always had a lot of, were Toy Soldiers. As simple as these things are, a child's imagination can make them come alive! As it was, plastic toy soldiers were the compromise to the more expensive item I had my heart set on. If my plan didn't work, I could at least walk out of the toy store with a new bag of plastic green soldiers or even a new Army vehicle to add to my collection. These things were great. With some added imagination, my buddies and I could create an entire battlefield in our backyard or playground. We would collectively combine our soldiers and team up the other kids. It was the "good guys" against the "bad guys", as we massed our forces to save the world! To add to the realism, we would generate our own sound effects out of our mouths, mocking grenades exploding, machine gun fire, tank treads screeching and the "infamous" scream from a soldier who was just shot or hit by a flame thrower. Just imagine, all this without one battery! Those of course were the good old days. Even today, the green plastic soldiers still hang on store shelves. Every time my kids drag me into the toy store, I can't help but notice them. I'll always share a quick story with my children of "my days as a kid" and how brave my toy soldiers were in battle. I'll grab a bag of them off of the shelf and start playing soldier, sound effects and all! It's about that time that their eyes roll up inside their head and they walk away pretending not to know me. It's now become a silly tactic I use to get them out of the toy store and usually, but not always, seems to work. Apparently I still have some use for these little guys after all. As I place them back on the shelf, it brings a smile, knowing that they will someday find a home. It will simply be another parent who can't keep up with the Joneses, and another child to choose their destiny just as I did. |
