Vacationing at Mt Shasta
By Tony Lee
Mt. Shasta receives tourists from all across the nation and Northern California and is a gateway to the best recreation source in the area. It's known worldwide for the picturesque mountain terrain and quality of life. Because of its unique blend of great neighborhoods, green parks, popular restaurants and growing business community, make this tourist town the pride of Siskiyou County. With a modest population of 3600, it creates the "small-town" atmosphere and makes living there so popular. Mt Shasta is located 60 miles north of Redding and Just south of the Oregon border on Interstate 5. Its alpine valley is surrounded by pine tree covered mountains with the snowy volcanic peak of Mount Shasta reaching 14,162 feet. The town of Mt. Shasta stretches an area of only 3.4 square miles, with an elevation of 3500 feet and is surrounded by the Shasta Trinity National Forest. Mt. Shasta City was home to the Okwanuchu Native American tribe during the 1820s. Soon after, American Pioneers occupied the area, paving the path of the Siskiyou Trail. In 1851, gold was discovered in a town called Yreka, not far from Mt. Shasta. Ross McCloud began modernization of the area, building the first lumber mill, where the Sisson Museum is now stands. As the population grew, the first hotel was built, housing travelers and tourists seeking to climb Mt Shasta. As the busy town recognized a need for a more practical source of transportation, the Central Pacific Railroad was extended to the area and completed in 1887. The existence of the railroad brought an increase in population and tourism. The city of Mt Shasta went through many name changes. The town took on the name "Strawberry Valley" in its early days, and then was renamed Berryvale. The town name was then changed to Sisson, California, named after the successful land owner Justin Sisson. Sisson took on its final name change in 1924, and called Mount Shasta City. Today, Mt Shasta maintains it tourist atmosphere, serving as one of the largest ski resorts in Northern California. With its gentle slope to Mt Shasta, it resembles an alpine village, offering a scenic view year round. Although Mt Shasta's busiest season is in winter, there are many activities during the summer to keep the tourist entertained. Many lakes throughout area have access for swimming. Swimming is most popular in the late summer days, as waters reach their warmest temperature. Many lakes such as Lake Shastina and Lake Siskiyou have developed swimming areas and camp grounds. Fishing is as great as it gets in the Shasta area, as well as horse back riding and hiking. The highlight of Shasta's winter season is course skiing. As businesses gear up for the winter ski season, the town comes alive with snow skiers from all over the world. Shasta offers the best ski lodges around, such as the Shasta Ranch B&B and Strawberry Valley Inn. After a long day on the slopes, you can Curl up to a cheery fire and prepare for your next ski experience! Mt. Shasta is definitely a vacation spot for the whole family and has something to offer for everyone, winter or summer! |
