Visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium
By Tony Lee
Located 125 miles south of San Francisco and 360 miles north of Los Angeles is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is considered to be one of the largest aquariums in the world. Some 1.8 million people visit annually. The aquarium is host to 35,000 plants and animals, representing over 600 species. One of the most popular attractions and the highlight of the Ocean's Edge wing is a 33-foot high tank for viewing California coastal marine life. Using this tank, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was the first in the world to grow live California Giant. With the use of a wave generating machine, it provides the life supporting conditions for Giant Kelp to live and grow. The tank is also designed to allow sunlight to penetrate the open tank top, and continuously pumps in raw seawater. Some of the exhibits include stingrays, jellyfish, sea otters, and various other native marine species, which can be viewed both above and below the waterline. The jellyfish, exhibit uses an aquarium called a Kreisel tank. The tank uses a circular water flow to support and suspend the jellies. This offers visitors at several levels in the building, to view the creatures of the kelp forest. The Outer Bay opened an exhibit in September 2004, making it home to the first Great White Shark ever to be kept in captivity. Kids will be entertained by the aquariums Touch Pools. The Touch Pools provide a first hand look at what a few of the ocean creatures actually feel like. The Touch pools are home to friendly bat rays, which seem to be just as curious about visitors as the visitors are about them. Next to the Touch Pool you will find a shallower, sea pool full of starfish, sea cucumbers and sea urchins. Aquarium personnel are provided to answer all of your questions about these amazing sea creatures. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is an exciting way for your kids and adults to learn about our neighbors of the sea. If you’re ever in central California, stop by and pay a visit. Make sure you set aside an entire day and don't forget the camera! |
